Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was an Irish writer, poet, and physician known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield, his pastoral poem The Deserted Village, and his plays The Good-Natured Man. He was also thought to have written the classic childrens tale, The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes, giving the world that familiar phrase. In one of his earliest works, the Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning, Goldsmith gave utterance to the thought which was to be his guiding star in the field of drama.
